O LORD, you have examined my heart
and know everything about me.
You know when I sit down or stand up.
You know my thoughts even when I’m far away.Psalms 139: 1-2
Every time I read Psalm 139, I am just in awe of God’s knowledge and greatness. He knows our thoughts, our ways and motives. There is nothing we could ever hide from Him.
Does that disturb or comfort you?
Aren’t you stoked at the thought that even though he sees our sins, short comings and dark desires he still loves us the same?
Why then do we have to pray if he already knows everything about us? I guess the simple answer to that is communication, the basis of any solid relationship. God wants us to talk to Him, to tell Him our thoughts and emotions and the things we’re going through.
I believe King David knew this and that is why he was known as “a man after God’s own heart”. And we see this intimacy demonstrated in the closing verses of this chapter:
Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
Point out anything in me that offends you,
and lead me along the path of everlasting life.23 and 24
Isn’t that awesome?
